The Urban Homesteaders blog was inspired by the belief that by sharing our adventures, trying to evolve into a more sustainable lifestyle, that we could possibly inspire others to make a stand and demand a more sustainable culture. We hope to serve as an educational tool, a model for creating social change, and simply to promote the public discourse on sustainability. There are plans for guest appearances and off-site video featuring many of the local efforts going on in the Rochester area to promote topics including energy independence, green building practices, organic farming, and land use planning.
This blog exists only in the hopes of engaging people in the topic so please, don’t hesitate to email us with story suggestions or comments.
Ben Munson
Ben grew up in Penfield, NY and went on to get a degree in Finance at RIT. He spent five years working in Boston, Philadelphia, and Richmond and traveling to many others for business. Deciding it was never too soon to get in to real estate investing, he bought two investment properties in the city of Rochester, NY and became a licensed real estate agent. Most of the time you can find him updating something in the house, co-developing an apartment listing internet company, consulting with area non-profits on sustainability issues, and working to make free municipal wireless internet access (Muni WiFi) a reality as a member of the South Wedge Planning Committee Board.
Kristin Cox
Kristin was also raised in Rochester, NY and at the age of 21 became a landlord when she bought a two-family home in the South Wedge neighborhood. As luck would have it, the South Wedge has prioritized sustainable community development and community is thriving. Kristin works as a loan originator for Preferred Mortgage helping home buyers get mortgages and existing home owners refinance. Aside from being the South Wedge’s biggest fan, she is a provisional member of the Junior Leagues of Rochester, and spends her spare time writing and keeping this blog running.

Love you!

Hey! I’m originally from California, currently living in Brooklyn, and i’m planning a move to Rochester with my girlfriend (a Rochester native) in the spring. I came across your website after researching neighborhoods in Rochester.
I just want to wish you guys the best of luck with your project! It sounds great, and it makes me really excited to join the South Wedge community soon!!
Kristin and Ben,
Because of your efforts, you have helped me get excited about composting. I wanted to start a small garden and had nothing but sand and rocks to work with. Now, I hope that with my converted pool filter I can get lots of good compost to build some sort of a garden by next year. Plus, I have a goal to reduce my garbage to less than the size of a grocery bag per week. This is step #1 of many.
Thank you for your help and guidance. Please don’t stop blogging.

P.S. Check out this picture of me and my new composter. I am just so proud with my ricotta kitchen container in hand.
I converted it mostly by myself. I had a little help from my neighbor removing some of the old pool parts. The only cost was the PVC (I know not ideal) and spigot. It has a locking, venting, lid, a spigot for the garden tea, and it spins quite easily.

Congrats on the front-page newspaper exposure and in general for all of your efforts. Colin and I, along with all of our Atlanta friends, are keeping track of your strides towards green living. Very proud of you both! We’ll be using your tips to begin transforming our urban clay-ey soil into a composted garden soon!
I first want to congratulate both of you on doing your part to save our planet! Secondly, it makes me really proud to a Rochester native(Greece) and see that there are folks making such a difference in my neck of the woods.
I currently live in Ithaca, where i own a business called Greener Gardening, i am certainly going to direct folks to watch your blog, in hopes that more will join hands with “us” to make this world a more sustainable place for our children. I would love to come visit your urban homestead next time i make it back “home” Keep spreading your love for a sustainable lifestyle and thanks for showing others it can be done.
Blessings and happiness
Mark
Great idea for a web site, but unless I’m missing something, it seems like it has slowed down. Any plans for expansion?
